Hi Austin, I advise reading the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson if you are indeed interested in it, obvs its an older book based off of slightly older science knowledge, but it most certainly is interesting non-the-less
    btw, enjoy your day

Speaking of science fiction games, I'd love to see Austin do a video on Rimworld's eclipses and how ridiculously long they last. I am very curious about the science behind 8+ hour eclipses.

If a satellite can create an earth sized magnetic field. Why not build two of them the same size and put them on Mars. That seems more efficient and safer (minimizing risk of asteroid impacts or other space debris and less chance to run out of power.) I know it was mentioned it just seems like a satellite would be a moot point

This is why I tell people not to listen to people saying “oh we’ll just colonize Mars if we can’t save the Earth” that idea is predicated on the best case scenario of a best case scenario. The entire idea falls to pieces if even one step of the process doesn’t go perfectly to plan.

Austin, This is one of my favorite videos you've done. Just the whole science behind something as cool as possible terraforming another planet. If you haven't read the book "The Martian" I highly recommend it, it's not about terraforming but a guys struggle to live on Mars for several years, and the auther went to great lengths to make sure his science was as accurate as possible

Im not sure you got the math correct on the diameter of the coil, 1m = 1000mm = 187 years and 10cm = 100mm = 18.7 years because youve only decreased the diameter 10 times, not 100 times needed for 1.87 ( approx 2 ) years

    August 24, 2019 at 7:41 pm

10:15 Yup…magnetism is still relatively an unknown to science. So until that time, the best we can do is to live in bio-spheres, on Mars. 10:50 You want "us" to impact the atmosphere of another planet? Have you forgotten what made us leave earth in the first place? 13:50 No one said anything about the red hat? 16:20 Importing anything from earth to cause a change in the atmosphere of another planet will generate the same effect as inviting a foreign fish into a lake/river, and we have seen that it isn't what we wanted to happen. 17:30 Hundreds of thousands of years?…time to invent the Genesis Torpedo.

…. wouldnt the thinner wire for the super magnet increase resistance which will increase heat and limit amperage due to said resistance, making it actually impossible to push more current through the magnets? nevermind that…. wouldnt it also get insanely hot (further increasing resistance and limiting current) and quite possibly destroy itself?

NASA did a recent study and concluded that Mars doesn't have enough material to make enough greenhouse gases to raise the temperature significantly enough to terraform it. but we can still do in SM:GP and who knows what we might be able to do in the future.

Better find another planet with a "decent" biosphere with less stuff to worry about…
We are more likely to be able to travel interstellar, than to terraform in such a large scale until we need it, I guess.

if i was the one terraforming mars, I would probably just have everybody use rebreather style breathing apparatus's that instead of taking and cleansing a persons breath it would take the crap atmosphere and cleanse that and make it into breathable atmosphere. sure, it might be annoying, but it's better to have you being able to live there within closer to 100 years than 200+ years, since you are breathing oxygen filtered from the CO2 by the rebreather aparatus, as long as you are warm enough and the atmosphere is a high enough pressure, bing bang boom, MARS COLONIZED!!!!!!!!

The oxygen-carbon dioxide issue could be fixed by just pumping carbon dioxide into Mars’ atmosphere to just have around 1/5 of Earth’s atmospheric pressure, which would still allow people to live on there since the same amount of oxygen is there, it’s just that there’s no gases like nitrogen.
